TAE40110 to TAE40122 – All You Need To Know About Upgrading Your Cert IV TAE.
Back to Articles

Upgrading from the TAE40110 to the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is an excellent way to demonstrate to both current and prospective employers that you possess up-to-date skills and knowledge for training and assessment in today’s dynamic and ever-evolving vocational education and training (VET) sector.

While it's no longer mandatory to upgrade to the latest TAE version, staying ahead of the curve is always a smart move. In this article, we’ll explore just how simple the upgrade process can be—and how it could boost your confidence, refresh your skills, and open new professional opportunities.

A Quick Look Back - The TAE Journey

The TAE40110 has been in use for over 15 years. During that time, we've seen a number of significant updates, particularly the 2019 changes requiring TAE10 holders to complete TAELLN411 and TAEASS502 to remain compliant. This caused frustration for many trainers—some even left the industry altogether, disheartened by the constant changes and new compliance hoops.

Fast Forward to 2025 - What’s Changed?

Under the 2025 Standards for RTOs Credentials Policy, things have become more streamlined. Trainers and assessors can now hold any of the following qualifications to train and assess:

  • TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

That’s right—you no longer need to hold TAELLN411 or TAEASS502 separately to remain compliant.

So, Why Upgrade If It's Not Required?

While the upgrade isn’t compulsory, there are still compelling reasons to consider it:

  1. Currency of Skills: If you’ve been out of the industry for a while or haven't updated your training knowledge recently, the TAE40122 will bring you up to speed with current practices.
  2. Emerging Trends: Stay informed about new industry trends, changes to legislation, and updates to the training.gov.au national VET Register system.
  3. Professional Confidence: An upgrade is a valuable refresher that ensures you're equipped to meet the expectations of today’s learners and employers.

What Credit Might You Receive?

The TAE40110 qualification includes 7 core and 3 elective units, and you may be able to receive credit for a number of these elective units + the unit TAEDEL412. If you've also completed other industry relevant Qualifications at Cert IV or above, you might also get credit for units that can be imported making the transition more efficient than you might expect.

Take a look at the table below to compare equivalent units and see what you might already have covered. We have highlighted the equivalent units in green.

"How long will the upgrade take?" The duration depends on your current competencies, how much time you can dedicate to studying, and the RTO's programme structure. The enrolment period is 12 months, but you could speed-run it in less time if you commit to the study grind.

"Is the upgrade worth the investment?" Absolutely! Upgrading ensures you remain a top-tier trainer or assessor, aligning your skills with the latest industry standards. It's like having the latest gadgets in your superhero toolkit, making you more competitive and effective in your role.
