TAE Update Time – Take 2 – Changes to the Diploma of VET

Well, it’s TAE update time – Take 2

Last month we touched on changes to the TAE Training Package and focussed on the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

This month we will look at the changes to the diplomas and boy, there are quite a few so we will try to keep it as short and clear as possible.

To access the entire training product changes, please click HERE.

The following article will break down the major changes to the TAE diploma’s

Change 1:  Entry Requirements

Those entering this qualification must now be able to demonstrate skills and knowledge and at least 12 months of experience in a relevant VET role, and vocational currency and competence, where vocational competence is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification.

Let’s make this a bit clearer,

What this means is that those students wanting to complete the diploma will essentially already be working as trainers and assessors in RTO’s or training organisations delivering accredited courses and will have done so for at least 12 months prior to enrolment. This could be demonstrated in any number of ways such as submission of resumes, letters of employment, work contracts etc…

Change 2: The Diploma of Training, Design and Development has been removed and the Diploma of VET has been redeveloped as a single diploma with 3 specialisations

The TAE50216 Diploma of Training, Design and Development will no longer exist

The TAE50116 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training now becomes the TAE50122 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training

The new TAE50122 Dip VET contains specialisations as follows:

  • Advanced training and assessment
  • Design and development
  • VET leadership.

The achievement of a specialisation will be identified on testamurs as follows:

  • TAE50122 Diploma of Training and Assessment (Advanced Training and Assessment)
  • TAE50122 Diploma of Training and Assessment (Design and Development)
  • TAE50122 Diploma of Training and Assessment (VET Leadership)

Each of these different specialisations is a really great addition to the Training Package as it really allows focus on the sectors of VET that are most relevant to your work role.

An example:

If you are a Training Manager, delivering and assessing training and leading other trainers and assessors in best practice, then the TAE50122 Diploma of Training and Assessment (Advanced Training and Assessment) would be most suited to your role

If, however you are an RTO Manager, Compliance Manager or Operations Manager working in an RTO, you may not need all of the skills and knowledge for training and assessment as such and instead want to learn more about audit practices,  people performance, leading assessment moderation and practice and interpreting compliance requirements. If this sounds like you, then the TAE50122 Diploma of Training and Assessment (VET Leadership)

There are a number of changes related to the new diplomas and for an in-depth review, please click on the link above to take you to the entire training product materials for review.

The big changes are:

The packaging rules have changed from 9 core units and 1 elective to 3 core units and 9 electives. Yes, you heard it right, there are now 12 units in each of the new diplomas

To be able to complete a number of the units, there are now a few prerequisite units required (so it’s definitely worth getting the new TAE40122 Cert IV TAE before jumping into the diplomas) these prerequisite unit requirements are as follows:

The following  lists the new core units and their equivalence to the TAE50116 units

  • TAEDES511 Design and develop strategies for training and assessment* – Not equivalent to TAEDES501  ( The asterix *  means that to enter into this unit, you must first hold the TAEDES411 unit from the TAE40122)
  • TAEDES515 Evaluate training – Equivalent to TAEDES505
  • TAEPDD511 Maintain and enhance professional practice -Equivalent to TAEPDD501

Is it equivalent?

The new TAE50122 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training is now deemed NOT equivalent to the TAE50116 Diploma of VET because of the inclusion of the new specialisations.

When will this all become a reality?

No need to worry quite yet. PWC skills have now closed the window for receiving feedback and the final review and endorsement should happen in the next 2-3 months.

Once the feedback has been reviewed (and we are anticipating A LOT of feedback) the changes will need to be endorsed and then there will be a transition “teach-out” period of 12 – 18 months.

Fortress will be working hard over the coming year to start developing these new qualifications so when and if you do decide to upgrade,  and when the new Cert IV TAE is endorsed, we will be here ready to assist.
