Frequently Asked Questions About the New TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

With the endorsement of the new TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment by the Australian Industry Skills Committee (AISC) on 8 November 2022 and endorsed by Skills Ministers on 18 November 2022, there are lots of questions being asked, chief among these are;

• What happens now?
• Do I need to do anything about this?

The following blog post will aim to answer these questions (and a few more), so you can put your mind at ease and gain some insight into what’s next in the world of TAE.

What is the difference between the TAE40122 and the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?

The big difference between the TAE40116 and TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is the number of units of competency you will complete:
The TAE40116 consists of 10 units of competency, whereas the new TAE40122 requires the completion of 12 units of competency.
TAE40116 has 10 Units of Competency within its Packaging Rules

9 core units and 1 elective unit

This means that there are 9 compulsory units to complete and 1 elective unit which can be chosen by you the student or can be offered as part of a standard course offered by your provider.

The TAE40122, on the other hand contains 12 units of competency within its Packaging Rules

6 core units and 6 elective units

Again the core units are compulsory and must be completed but the elective units can be chosen by the student and must be chosen from a list of different groups.

The TAE40122 has 4 different groups of electives:

• at least 3 must be chosen from Group A
• the remaining 3 electives can be chosen from
• either Group A, B, C or D
  OR
• you can import up to 3 electives from any currently endorsed Training Package as long as only one sits at an AQF level 3 ( for example; BSBCMM311) and as long as the elective is relevant to the outcomes of your course.

What are the pros and cons of the TAE40122 and the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?

I am enrolled in the TAE40116 right now, will my Qualification still be recognised even though it is superseded?

From the PWC Skills website:

“It is recognised that under Schedule 1 of the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 one of the credentials able to be held for trainers and assessors delivering training and assessment is the ‘TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or its successor‘.
It is understood that in line with current wording in the Standards, those currently holding a TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification would not be required to upgrade this to the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, as it is proposed that the 2022 version be deemed the successor to the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification”

The TAE40116 Cert IV TAE is deemed equivalent to the TAE40122. This means that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the TAE40116 Cert IV qualification that you will graduate with or currently hold.

Equivalence means that the overarching outcomes or the skills and knowledge gained during your TAE40116 course are essentially the same as those in the TAE40122.

So if you are worried that your current TAE40116 will not be worthwhile or recognised in future, you can stop worrying as it is a perfectly credible and acceptable Qualification and will still be recognised by employers and regulators for quite a few more years yet.

What is a transition (teach-out) period?

A transition period, in VET speak, is a period of time (usually 12 months) when a Qualification is superseded (“ superseded” means the Qualification is replaced by a newer version which is deemed “current”). The transition period gives RTOs time to:

• add the new training product to their scope, if needed
• complete training and assessment of students enrolled in the superseded product
• issue AQF certification for the superseded product
• transfer ongoing students to the new training product as applicable and if the student wishes to follow this pathway
• withdraw students who are not ongoing or who do not wish to continue with the superseded qualification

I have been offered a job next year but need the TAE40116 to start, should I wait and get the TAE40122?

It is completely up to you, but you do not have to wait to get started. Remember, the TAE40116 is an equivalent Qualification, so you can still enrol now for your TAE40116 as it is not superseded yet, and you can get started right away so you can start that job within the timeframe you need.

Will the TAE40122 Cert IV TAE cost more than the TAE40116 Cert IV TAE?

While we cannot speak for other providers, we do know that our TAE40122 Qualification will be more expensive than the current TAE40116.

Why?

1. Course Development: The cost of course development. The new TAE40122 has 12 units, all of which are very different from their predecessors; this means that a lot of time and resources have been spent on developing the new course, which will, in turn, increase the cost of the course.
2. Volume of Learning/Assessment: The learning and assessments are a lot more extensive than the TAE40116; this means that we, as an RTO, need to ensure that we have the resources in place to deliver our courses effectively and with maximum support to our students. Trainers and assessors will be working more hours to deliver and assess the course meaning that the cost associated with each student is a lot more than it was for TAE40116.
3. Quality: The quality of course materials and support offered to students is reflected in our costs. While our TAE40116 is also a quality course, the TAE40122 is a bigger course with a lot of change required when it comes to the development of materials, and we have taken this opportunity to really take on board what students have asked for and made the course more engaging, more interactive and a lot more fun, especially in regards to the e-learning.

When will the new TAE40122 Cert IV be available?

All RTOs subscribed were issued with the following email on Thursday, Nov 24th.

This email lets us know that the TAE Training Package is now endorsed, and the design team at training.gov.au are busy uploading all of the materials to training.gov.au, with release anticipated during the week commencing 5 December 2022.

This means that anytime over the coming week or so, we should see the new TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment as the new and most current Qualification on TGA. As the TAE40122 is deemed equivalent, all current RTOs that offer the TAE40116 will automatically have the TAE40122 added to scope and can begin delivering it.

Regarding actual delivery of the TAE40122, that will depend on each provider’s ability to develop, trial, review, validate and offer the new TAE40122 for delivery and assessment.

We can say that there is a lot of work involved in developing the new TAE40122, and while we anticipate the rollout of the new TAE40122 courses in their entirety in April 2023, we can work with students now who wish to get started earlier with a pathway towards the TAE40122.

If I enrol for the TAE40116 now, will I be automatically rolled over into the new TAE40122 when it becomes available?

Although the TAE40116 is deemed equivalent to the TAE40122, it is not as easy as just “ rolling’ students over into the new TAE40122 from the TAE40116.

Some of the units of competency from the TAE40116 are equivalent and can be credit transfers into the new TAE40122, such as TAEDES402 and TAEDEL401. However, many of the units have changed, and RTOs will need to spend time with each individual student to work out exactly how students can be rolled over from the old to the new qualification.

This is best discussed with a TAE expert at an RTO, as they can assist you in understanding your TAE40116 units completed so far and offer transition pathways from your TAE40116 to the new TAE40122.
